Description

The flag of the city of Arcos de la Frontera is dark red (RGB 171/24/47) with the coat of arms in its centre. I spotted this flag at a roundabout in Arcos on 6 November 2009.

Coat of Arms

The Arcos de la Frontera coat of arms is a red field with a silver (white) building masoned black, piled up and slightly higher in the middle, all above waves of blue and silver (white). The shield is topped by a ducal crown.

Alfonso X. the Wise, who conquered the city from the Arabs in 1255, already used these arms, showing a building consisting of five silver arcs ordered three above two. The arms are canting. In between the arms of the city changed showing a castle with a ducal crown above its central turret, reported 1791 and 1792. The current version is used at least since 1877.
