History of Mourou

Captain Claude Mourou founded in 1857 the Compagnie de Navigation à Vapeur Claude Mourou, estblishing a line between Marseilles and the Algerian ports of Philippeville (Skikda) and Bone (Annaba). The line was extended in 1865 to Tunis, vai Cagliari (Sardinia).

Mourou lost three of its five steam leiners: SS Prophète ran aground Cap Lardier, near Toulon, in 1860; SS Gironde sunk between Marseilles and Almeria in 1867; and SS Province-d'Alger ran aground the islands of Hyères in 1869. The last ship owned by Mourou, SS Sophie was sold in 1873 when the company winded up.

P. Bois [boi03] shows the house flag of Mourou as vertically divided blue-white-red, the white stripe being broader because of two triangles added on each side, and the blacl letters "MC" in the middle of the white stripe.
