Presentation of SCF

Société des Cargos Français (SCF) (presentation) was founded in 1919 by Julien Bessonneau to transport coal between Le Havre and Algeria. The company operated woooden cargo ships purchased in 1918 by the French State in Canada.

Julien Bessonneau (1880-1960) was the son of the industrial Julien Bessonneau (1842-1916), founder in 1901 in Angers of the Société anonyme des Filatures, Corderies et Tissages d'Angers, a main hemp industry in western France active until 1966, also a sponsor of early regional aeronautics. Following his accidental death, Bessonneau was succeeded by his son, Representative of Maine-et-Loire in 1919-1924; however, Bessonneau Jr. was a less successful businessman than his father and had to resign from the direction of the family company in 1921, not to mention the SCA fiasco.
