Presentation of Jarmina

Jarmina is located 25 km south-west of Vukovar. It has about 2,600 inhabitants, about 2,600 living in a single village of the same name.
The history of Jarmina is kind of typical for Slavoian villages. In the medieval times it was known as Jarmina Sv. Nikola (Hungarian, Jaromna Szent Miklos). After the liberation from the Turks in 1700 the village was settled first by Serbs from Bosnia and, since they did not stay, by Croats from the Lika region. Soon also Czechs and Slovaks were settled as well. However, the owners of the land decided in 1770 to move them out and to settle Germans there. These Germans were exiled by the end of the Second World War and Croats from the Zagorje region were settled in several waves. Today the village is over 98% Croat by population. It was heavily damaged during the 1990s war being just outside the lines held by the Serbs in the eastern parts of Slavonia.

Flag of Jarmina

The symbols of Jarmina are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Jarmina, adopted on 2 August 2001 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 15 October 2001 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 11.
This is repeated in the current Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Jarmina, adopted on 25 September 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 13 October 2009 in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Vukovarsko-srijemske županije, No. 15 (text).

The flag is described as "rectangular in shape, colored blue, 200 cm in length, 100 cm in width (height). The coat of arms is set in the centre of it. The length of the coat of arms is 42 cm, its width (height) is 50 cm. The coat of arms is set up 79 cm from the right and left edges of the flag and 25 cm from the top and bottom edges of the flag".

The coat of arms is described as "Divided by a wavy cut in two fields. In the bottom green field on the right is a yellow (golden) apple, on its left a yellow (golden) bunch of grapes. The wavy cut is coloured yellow (golden). The top field is blue".
The emblems on the coat of arms refer to the richness of the agriculture. Possibly the apple is also a hint on St. Nicholas, especially if the grapes are connected with St. Wendalinus (Sv. Vendelin), the other patron saint of the municipality.
