Description and meaning of the flag

The flag was horizontaly black - white - red, representing three main rivers in the land - Black, White and Red Volta. It was addopted on 1959.12.09.
Željko Heimer, 03 Dec 1995

The perfect similarity between the Upper Volta flag and the former German Empire flag (except the 2:3 vs. 3:5 proportion) is a pure coincidence. The flag of Upper Volta had been officialy adopted 9 December 1959 [smi75b]. Official name of the country was République de Haute-Volta.
