The flag and arms of São Martinho are prescribed by Municipal Law No. 284 promulgated on 10 May 1974.

Article 1.
a) The coat of arms consists in a Portuguese shield of 7 units on 8 units, horizontally divided or with two gyrons azure (blue) and vert (green). In chief on a field or a cross gules (red) three houses in saltire 2 and 1, recalling the origin of the people, their faith and constancy, their valorous and committed spirit. In base dexter on a field azure a maize cob or, sinister on a field vert a pig or, in base on a field or a tractor gules, symbolizing the municipality's main sources of income, resources, intrepidity and hope. The shield supported dexter by a soybean plant fructed proper and sinister a wheat plant proper fructed. Beneath the shield a scroll gules inscribed sable (black) "27-11, SÂO MARTINHO, 1963". The shield surmounted by a mural crown argent, with three towers, three crenels each, symbolizing municipal autonomy and the town.

The flag is prescribed but not described, in Article 2 c) of the Law.
