Municipality

The municipality of Abdon Batista (2,653 inhabitants in 2010; 23,560 ha) is located 330 km west of Florianópolis.

Abdon Batista was settled in 1919 by the Bortoli, Zanchett, Mocelin, Mecabô and Demeneck families, of Italian origin, coming from Guaporé (Rio Grande do Sul). They acquired plots near river Canoas and founded a settlement named Vargem, from "varzea", "a plain submitted to river flood", subsequently renamed to Vila Nova (New Town).
The district of Abdon Batista was established by Decree No. 534 issued on 2 March 1934. The municipality of Abdon Batista was established by State Law No. 7,684 promulgated on 26 April 1989.

The municipality's namesake is the politician Abdon Batista (1851-1922), who was State Representative (1884-1885, 1888-1889, 1901-1903, 1904-1906, 1910-1912), State Senator (1912-1915), Vice-President of the Province of Santa Catarina and interim President of the Province (1889), and interim Governor of the State (1906).

Description of the Flag

The flag of Abdon Batista is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 51 promulgated on 13 December 1990.

Article 2.
The municipal flag of Abdon Batista, selected in a contest open to the inhabitants of the municipality and designed by Eliane Valkíria Busnelllo, student at Colégio Estadual José Zanchetti, shall be quartered in "X", with red and green quarters formed by four white stripes of 1 unit in width charged with black stripes of 1 unit in width, starting from the two angles of a circle charged with the municipal coat of arms.

Article 3.
The municipal flag of Abdon Batista obeys general rules, being quartered by an "X" symbolizing the spirit of cooperation by different parties that merged together to form a strong basis for progress and prosperity.
The municipal coat of arms applied to the flag represents the Municipal Government, while the white circle inscribing it represents the town proper, as the seat of the municipality.
White is a symbol of peace, friendship, prosperity, purity and religious feeling.
The white stripes superimposed with black stripes represent the spread of the municipal power on the municipal territory.
Black is a symbol of austerity, prudence, knowledge, moderation and firmness.
Green is a symbol of honor, civility, courtesy, glee, abundance and hope, since it recalls greening fields in spring.
Red represents dedication, self-esteem, audacity, courage and valiance.

The coat of arms of Abdon Batista is prescribed by Municipal Law No. 50 promulgated on 13 December 1990.

Article 2.
The coat of arms features symbols of the sources of production and income for the municipality: maize, beans and tobacco as the strong base of agriculture; livestock as the cattle-breeding potential of the region.
The green field and the rising sun symbolize new horizons heading to prosperity.
The connected towers on top symbolize the municipality's sovereignty, presented by the ties that unite the Executive and Legislative Powers, and the population's potential reflected daily through union and mutual cooperation on a firm and decided way towards progress.
