About the Flag

The municipality of Ituverava (38,699 inhabitants; 70,524 ha) is located in northeastern São Paulo State, 100 km of Ribeirão Preto and 400 km of São Paulo.

Ituverava was founded on 16 July 1818 by Alferes João Alves de Figueiredo, who built a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Carmel. The village that developed nearby became the district of Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Franca do Imperador. The municipality of Ituverava was established on 10 March 1885. The municipality is named for Tupi-Guarani words meaning "a shining waterfall".

The symbols of Ituverava are prescribed in Article 4 of the Municipal Constitution, adopted on 5 April 1990, as "representative of its culture and history, I) the coat of arms, II) the flag, and III) the anthem".

The flag is horizontally divided blue-white-blue with a thin horizontal black stripe in the middle. An emblem, derived from the municipal coat of arms, is placed in the middle of the flag. The emblem is a roundish version of the field of the coat of arms, portraying a waterfall landscape. The yellow fleur-de-lis from the chief of the coat of arms is placed above the emblem, which is supported by two branches of cotton.
