Hlinsko lies 590 metres high above sea level; the town got its name after remarkable good clay, that was found here in the past, and after bygone craftsmen who worked in this region. We can trace Hlinsko's history back to the 11th century for the first written hint at the existence of the place comes from those times. Hlinsko stands on the banks of the Chrudimka river, at the foot of the mountains of the Bohemian - Moravian Uplands. The town is situated on the fringe of the preserve areas of the Žďárské Hills and the Iron Hills (Žďárské vrchy, Železné hory).

Hlinsko and Pardubice: only details of the main figure (half - horse) and colour of the bridle (Hlinsko has blue one!) differs these two Arms from each other. According to legend on conquest of Milano City by Frederick Barbarossa, there was also Ancestor of Lords of Stará and Pardubice. among Bohemian troops of Duke Vladislav II (later King Vladislav I ), which helped the Emperor. He (it is said) made one of raids into Milano streets and drawing back, the Milano defenders were trying to stop him with bars in city gate. The bar has cut his horse into halves, but the knight was not injured and he brought upper part of his dead horse in the camp. And this accident was documented by knights new Coat of Arms. So much the legend. The other legend also says that Duke Vladislav got at Milan gates not only Royal crown, but also second tail for Bohemian Lion. Who knows...?
