Mayen Coat of Arms

Shield Argent parted by a centred cross Gules, 1st and 4th quarter charged with a sinister pointing key Gules in pale, 2nd and 3rd quarter charged with an eradicated tree Vert
Meaning:
A seal was granted to Mayen in 1291 together with the city rights. The seal displayed a castle, probably the nowadays Genoveva Castle, which was finished around 1280 and two keys in saltire at the top. On later seals a star was added. A seal of a lay judge from 1429 displayed a cross having a key on each quarter. Cross and key as attributes of St. Peter were alluding to the Archbishopric of Trier. St. Peter is the patron saint of the archbishopric. The current arms were made by augmenting the seals by canting trees of May, which probably happened at the end of the 19th century. The position of keys and trees changed various times during the following decades. People are dancing around that tree on 1 May every year. In the region that tree is usually a beech, as depicted on the arms.
