City of Rüthen

Description of flag:
The flag's ratio is 3:5. It is a horizontal white over red over white flag. The ratio between the stripes is 1:3:1. The coat of arms is within the red stripe shifted to the hoist.
Description of coat of arms:
In a silver (=white) shield is a black cross, touching all edges with a red diamond in each quarter and a fifth diamond in the centre of the cross. In other words: the diamonds are placed in quincunx.
Meaning:
The cross is the symbol of the archbishopric and electorate of Köln. The diamondss (German: Rauten) are symbolizing the city's name. Some people say that Karl I the Great granted the diamondss as a symbol of the five wounds of Jesus Christ. This must be however an urban legend, because the coat of arms was unknown before the 12th century.
Authorized: 19 August 1976 by Regierungspräsident Arnsberg
Veddeler 2003, p.501
Note: This one is probably the current flag.
