Presentation of Santa Cruz de Marchena

The municipality of Santa Cruz de Marchena (214 inhabitants in 2013; 2,000 ha; municipal website) is located 30 km north of Almería.

Santa Cruz de Marchena originates in the domain of Haratalgima (The Mosque's Borough), established in the 12th century as part of the tahá of Alboloduy. The domain was divided in the 16th century into the tahás of Marchena and Alboloduy; the village was renamed Santa Cruz de Marchena and territorial confusions were eventually solved with the support of the Duke of Maqueda.
