Presentation of Morelábor

The municipality of Morelábor (685 inhabitnts in 2014; 3,856 ha; municipal website) is located 60 km north-east of Granada. The municipality was established as the merger of the former municipalities of Moreda (administrative seat, 590 inh.) and Laborcillas (locally known as Las Laborcillas, 150 inh.), prescribed by Decree No. 2,199, adopted on 20 July 1974 by the Spanish Government and published on 6 August 1974 in the Spanish official gazette, No. 187, pp. 16,190-16,191 (text). The new municipality was named for the first syllable of the name of its two components.

Moreda was granted to the Contreras Benavides by the Catholic Monarchs, follosing the reconquest of the region from the Moors (1485). In the 19th-20th centuries, the village mostly belonged to the Marquis of La Motilla, who ruled it in a feudal manner. Permission was required to open new doors and windows and no land was available for the building of new dwellings. In 1987, the municipality expropriated several parts of the former feudal domain; as a symbol, the first retrieved plot (5,000 sq. m) was allocated to new schools.
The Moreda railway station is a main junction, where the lines from Granada and Almería merge to a single line heading to Madrid. The Moreda Triangle allows the by-pass of the Moreda station, which is now nearly deserted.
Laborcillas belonged to the Marquis of Villa Alegre.

Symbols of Morelábor

The flag and arms of Morelábor are prescribed by "administrative silence" - that is, after the administration had failed to proceed the registration submission in due time. This was confirmed by a Decree adopted on 30 November 2004 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 20 December 2004 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 246, pp. 28,986-29,002 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular, in proportions 2:3, made of three equal horizontal stripes, the upper, green, the central, white, and the lower, red.
Coat of arms: Per bend sinister, 1. Gules a Latin cross a shroud on the arms all argent, 2. Argent three wheat spikes vert. The shield surmounted by a Royal crown closed.

The Holy Cross is the patron saint of the municipality. The three spikes refer to agriculture, the main source of income for the municipality, and to the three settlements of Moreda, Moreda Station and Laborcillas.
