Presentation of Fresno de la Vega

The municipality of Fresno de la Vega (622 inhabitants in 2009; 1,514 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of León Province, 35 km of León.

Fresno de la Vega was mentioned for the first time, in the 10th century, as Fraxino (from Latin, fraxinus, "an ash tree"), in donations made on 25 June 986 and 4 February 989. In the so-called Frexino Chart, dated 16 June 1016, King Alfonso V ordered the transfer of Fraxino from Fromárigo Sendíniz - a malefactor who could not pay the fines required after several crimes and rapes - to Pedro Fernández.
Fresno de la Vega is the home of the pepper known as the Four Moors' Pepper, a local variety of specific brown color and of big size. The local pepper has been celebrated every year in late September since 1984 during the Fresno de la Vega Pepper's Festival.
