Presentation of Alfarnatejo

The municipality of Alfarnatejo (516 inhabitants; 2,000 ha; municipal website) is located 50 km north-east of Málaga, in a mountainous region known as the "Southern Pyrenees".
Remains found in the defiles of river Sabor show that the region of Alfarnatejo was already settled in the Neolithic. During the Moorish period, the tops of the Altos del Fraile (1,222 m asl) formed a convenient watch post; some historians believe that the castle of Sabor was built there and that the village of Alfarnatejo developed under the protection of the castle.

Symbols of Alfarnatejo

The flag (photo) and arms of Alfarnatejo, adopted on 13 October 2006 by the Municipal Council and submitted on 25 October 2006 to the Directorate General of the Local Administration, are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 2 November 2006 by the Directorate General of the Local Administration and published on 17 November 2006 in the official gazette of Andalusia, No. 223, p. 24 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Panel in proportions 2:3 (hoist per length), horizontally divided in two equal stripes, the first red and the second blue. In the middle the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Per fess, 1. Azure a mill argent port and windows azure flanked dexter with a noria argent, 2. Gules a badger statant argent with a mask sable. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The mill and the badger refer to the town's name, from the Arab word alfarnate, "a mill", and the Spanish word tejón, "a badger", an animal quite common in the neighborhood.
