Presentation of El Cabaco

The municipality of El Cabaco (290 inhabitants in 2010; 4,735 ha; unofficial website) is located in the south of Salamanca Province, 70 km from Salamanca.

El Cabaco may have been named for cavado, from Latin cavatus, "a place with excavations"; the same root is found in the name of brook Cavaquillo and river Cavin watering the village. Moreover, the big ditches called cávenes, spread all over the municipal territory, were used by the Romans to wash gold.
El Cabaco was resettled in the 12th century by a few Castilian families, as part of the resettlement plan led by Raymond of Burgundy on behalf of King Alfonso VI. The village was first mentioned in 1205 in the privilege granted by Alfonso IX to Miranda, which included El Cabaco.
