Presentation of Parada de Arriba

The municipality of Parada de Arriba (265 inhabitants in 2015; 1,781 ha) is located 15 km west of Salamanca. The municipality is made of the villages of Parada de Arriba (255 inh.), Carrascal de Pericalvo (10 inh.), and Alberguería de Valmuza (deserted).

Alberguería de Valmuza is the birth place of the prominent grammarian Benito Martínez Gómez Gayoso (1700-1787), Professor at the University of Salamanca and Archivist at the Royal Chamber. Published in 1743, his Gramática de la lengua castellana reducida a breves reglas y f‡cil método para la instrucción de la juventud prescribed some grammatical standards for the Spanish language. Gayoso remained famous for his rivalry with Friar Benito de San Pedro de la Escuela Pío, who published in 1769 Arte de romance castellano, dispuesta según sus principios generales i uso de los mejores autores. Under the pseudonym of Antonio Gobeyos. Gayoso published in 1780 a harsh critic of the rival grammar (deemed "unnecessary and pernicious"), as Conversaciones críticas sobre el libro intitulado "Arte del Romance Castellano".

Symbols of Parada de Arriba

The flag and arms of Parada de Arriba are prescribed by an Agreement adopted on 31 May 2016 by the Municipal Council, signed on 23 November 2016 by the Mayor and published on 30 November 2016 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 231, p. 54,789 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: QQuadrangular flag, in proportions 1:1. Red with a white cross, whose stripes reach the flag's edges, the vertical stripe, centered, and the horizontal stripe at 1/5 from the flag's upper edge. The stripes are in width 1/5 of the flag's width and are charged, in their intersection, with the municipal coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Spanish shield rounded-off in base. Per pale, 1. Gules a procession cross argent, 2a. Argent a holly oak eradicated gules, 2b. Gules a milk bucket argent. The shield surmounted by a Spanish Royal crown.

The milk bucket is a straightforward reference to the nickname of the village, Parada de los lecheros (Milkmen's Parada), recalling that the local cows are a profuse source of mil supply for the town of Salamanca.
