The department is named after the estuary of Gironde (75 km), made by the confluency of rivers Garonne and Dordogne.

The flag of the General Council of Gironde (photo, 19 November 2010) is white with the logo of the General Council in the middle.
The logo of the General Council is made of an emblem showing the department of Gironde, represented as a a red pentagon placed on the Atlantic coast of France, represented as a black hexagon. The writing "Gironde / CONSEIL GENERAL", written in red and black letters, respectively, is placed on the right of the emblem. There is a thin red line below the writing.
The General Council inaugurated its graphic chart, made by the
Maison Poaplume agency (website, in August 2009.
The colors are prescribed as:

The former logo of the General Council is made of the aforementioned emblem. "CONSEIL GENERAL / Gironde" is written in black letters below the emblem, and the whole is placed on a white background framed by a black square border.
