The municipality of Saronikos (29,002 inhabitants in 2011, 13,343 ha) was established in the 2011 local government reform as the merger of the former municipalities of Anavyssos (Ανάβυσσος, 6,202 inh.), Kalyvia Thorikou (Καλύβια Θορικού, 14,424 inh.), Kouvaras (Κουβαράς, 2,008 inh.), Palaia Fokaia (Πάλαια Φώκαια, 3,436 inh.), and Saronida (Σαρωνίδα, 2,932 inh.).

Former municipality of Kalyvia Thorikou

Kalyvia Thorikou is the seat of new municipality of Saronikos. Its population was rural until the 1970s and the 1990s. Suburban housing was developed in the 1980s and the 1990s; most of the population is now urban.

The flag of Kalyvia Thorikou (photo) was white with the emblem of the municipality, showing the head of the kouros found at Volomandra, in the former municipality of Kalyvia Thorikou.
