Coat of Arms

[COA of Varteig]image by Tomislav Šipek, 10 February 2016

Blazon: På rød bunn en sølv kvinneskikkelse i fotsid drakt med løftede hender.
In English: Gules a woman in a long dress with her hands raised argent.
Approved by the royal resolution of 14 December 1979 after a drawing by Truls Nygaard. [c2j87]
According to [c2j87], human figures are seldom used as heraldic charges (that may be so in the Norwegian heraldry, but not so in general elsewhere), but when they are they do not depict a particular person, but general human figures. Of course, the woman figure in the arms of Varteig shall symbolize a particular woman - in this case Inga of Varteig, mother of Haakon Haakonson.
