It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a plain red field.

Coat of arms

Shield Or, a fork and a mattock in saltire, both Gules hilted Sable, surrounded by two sugar canes Vert crossed in base per saltire. Mural crown Argent with three visible towers (village rank) and white scroll with inscription in black initials "CANAVIAIS".
Meaning:
Fork and mattock are symbolizing agriculture and fieldwork and the formation of the "Sociedade Operária de Instrução e Recreio do Povo". The sugar canes are canting elements. The commune's name is derived from "cana".

Canaviais Commune is one of the 12 communes of the Évora municipality (q.v.); it had 3442 inhabitants in 2011 and covers 19.4 km².
