It is a quite typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered background (meaning town rank) of white and purple.

The coat of arms is argent around a fess sable changed with three maize ears argent set in pale three bunches of grapes fruited purpure and leaved and stemmed vert. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "Vila de Nelas".

Nelas municipality had 14 283 inhabitants in 2001, and it is divided in 9 communes, covering 127,82 km². It is part of Viseu District, traditional province Beira Alta, 1999 ref. adm. region Beira Litoral, C.C.R. / NUTS II Centro, and NUTS III Dão-Lafões.
