Presentation of Benedikt

The municipality of Benedikt (2,491 inhabitants in 2016; 2,410 ha) was formed in 1998 by separation from Lenart. The full name of the place, as shown on the seat of the municipality is Benedikt v Slovenskih goricah (Benedikt in the Slovenian Hills), but the municipality is simply named Benedikt.

Flag of Benedikt

The flag and arms of Benedikt are prescribed by Decision Odlok o grbu in zastavi Občine Benedikt ( (text), adopted on 29 March 2000 and published in the official Slovene gazette Uradni list Republike Slovenije, 36/2000.

The flag is rectangular, in proportions 2:1, vertically divided white-green-white with a yellow fimbriation. Article 3 of the Decision says: "In the middle of the flag, if it is hung vertically, is the coat of arms."
The coat of arms is set so that the yellow stripe matches the yellow fimbriation of the field. The fimbriation is prescribed as 1/40 of the hoist. The Decision prescribes that the ratio of the width of the coat of arms to the width of the flag is 10:23.

The colours of the coat of arms and the flag are prescribed as:

Green 100% HKS 47 K; 90% HKS 3 K
Yellow HKS 4 K
Black HKS 88 K

A document available on the municipal website shows a drawing of the flag with the name of the municipality added in the base of the flag, something not mentioned as part of the design in the Decision. That flag is not shown in the prescribed 1:2 proportions, but rather in 10:21, and has black outlines around the yellow fimbriations.

The municipality initiated in 1999 a public contest for the design of a coat of arms. The commission as hoc selected the design submitted by Boštjan Vauda, a designer from Ptuj, who was also commissioned to propose a flag (Tednik, No. 12, 8 July 1999).
The symbols were inaugurated in July 2000 (Tednik, No. 5, 8 July 2000).

The coat of arms is a shield bordered in gold, in proportions 20:21, vertically divided white-green (2:3) by a golden stripe of 1/20 of the shield's width. The green field is charged with a white Gothic letter "B" while the white field id charged with three golden haloed crowns.
Green represents the hilly region of Slovenske Gorice. The letter "B" is the initial of Benedikt. The three crowns stand for the parish of the Three Wise Men (the Three Holy Kings, as called in Slovene) that was the core around which the municipality developed.

Article 3 of the Decision says: "In the middle of the flag, if it is hung vertically, is the coat of arms." This would mean that the horizontal flag does no bear the arms, while the vertical version must bear them.
