The coat of arms of Šentrupert is "Azure a lion rampant or armed gules holding in his right paw a crescent increscent argent".
Lions are common in the coat of arms seen in the St. Rupert church; a lion appears in the coat of arms of the noble family Barbo ("Azure a lion rampant argent overall a bendlet or") and in the alleged coat of arms of St. Ema (or Hemma) in Valvasor's Armorial ("Per pale or three lions passant sable armed gules and azure a fess argent between three crescents pendant also argent").

Municipal symbols' contest

The competition for the symbols of Šentrupert was announced on 18 March 2008 on the municipal website. Here is a partial translation of the text.

The competition for design of basis for the coat of arms and the flag of the municipality of Šentrupert
Limited single-step invited competition for design of basis for the coat of arms and the flag of the municipality of Šentrupert

Introduction by the Mayor
The municipality of Šentrupert is a re-established municipality, that recently seceded from the previous municipality of Trebnje, to which it was incorporated in 1963. Until then the municipality of Šentrupert was independent, after the Second World War having the name of Rakovnik, as the name after a saint was considered politically inappropriate. The new municipality of Šentrupert is therefore now over a year old. In the second year of its activities, we are intending to celebrate the municipality day, on 2nd June that was elected among eight proposals we gave to public in the local journal. It is the date of upgrade of the Church of St. Rupert [dedicated to St. Rupert of Salzburg, 660?-710, founder of Salzburg] [...]
We have invited five reputable designer agencies to this competition. [...]
Rupert Gole, the Mayor of Šentrupert
