Description of the flag

The Town of Thomaston, Maine has recently erected a new 60-foot (18.29 m) high flag pole, nautical style with a yardarm. The USA Flag will go at the peak of course and the Maine Flag will go on one end of the yardarm. The Selectmen (a sort of 5-member mayor) approved a Town Flag for the other end of the yardarm.

The flag design is based on one side of the 1799 color of the Thomaston Cavalry with some inscription changes and the alteration of the color of the field from white to light blue. (The original of this side of the flag had the same design centered on a white field with the top inscription reading "INDEPENDENCE 1776" and the bottom "THOMASTON CAVALRY").

The official description is "A light blue field upon which shall be the design drawn by Mario Fabretto in November, 2009, which shall be 75% of the hoist in height, centered along the hoist dimension and at a position equal to 1.25 times one-half the hoist dimension (rounded up to the next highest half-foot if necessary) along the fly dimension from the hoist."

The flag was approved in December, 2009 and will be officially hoisted on July 24, 2010 during the annual celebration of General Henry Knox's Birthday. Knox was the first US Secretary of War during the Washington Administration, General of Artillery during the American Revolutionary War and he settled in Thomaston in 1795. He started much of the industry that the Town has thrived on since then and was the original sponsor of the Thomaston Cavalry. He died in 1806.
