The municipality of Josipdol is located some 40 km south-west of Karlovac, south of the town of Ogulin. It has 6,500 inhabitants, about 1,100 in the town of the same name itself.
The ancient town of Modruš, nowadays in ruins, is located in the municiplaity. Modruš provided the name of the 1886-1918 westernmost Croatian County of Modruš-Rijeka. The medieval rulers of Modruš were the Frankopan family, one of the most important Croatian feudal families, Princes of Krk

The symbols of Josipdol, adopted in 2003, are described in Articles 8-10 of the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Josipdol, adopted on 14 July 2009 by the Municipality Assembly and published in the County official gazette Glasnik Karlovačke županije.
The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, red with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.

Coat of arms of Josipdol - Image by Željko Heimer, 5 July 2004
The coat of arms of Josipdol is "Argent a heraldic helmet proper with a mantle gules and or and for the crest a wing per fess gules and or a mullet of the last in the first".
This is the helmet and the crest of the Frankopan family, whose coat of arms is "Per fess gules and or in the first a mullet of the second". Such an helmet and crest are usually set above the shield, that would contain the main heraldic emblems, and the use of the helmet as a charge in the shield itself is very unusual.

Table flag of Josipdol - Image by Željko Heimer, 2 November 2007
A promotion leaflet of Heraldic Art shows the table flag, obviously based on the ceremonial flag, but not entirely the same: red vertical flag ending triangularly, with the coat of arms, the name of the muicipality and two linden branches below. While the inscription in the ceremonial flag is made on two arches, on the table flag the word "JOSIPDOL" is inscribed on an horizontal straight line.
