The Municipality of Beretinec is located some 10 km south-west of Varaždin. The main settlement, Beretinec has only just above 2,200 inhabitants (1993).

The symbols of Beretinec are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Beretinec, adopted on 9 October 2001 by the Town Assembly and published in the County official gazette Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 20, include the description of the coat of arms and the flag.
This was repeated in Statut Općine Beretinec, adopted on 27 January 2006 by the Town Assembly and published on 28 January 2006 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 2, and its the current Statutes Statut Općine Beretinec, adopted on 13 July 2009 by the Town Assembly and published on 14 July 2009 in Službeni vjesnik Varaždinske županije, No. 20.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, green with the coat of arms in the middle.
Unlike the flag described (and displayed in the building of the Varaždin County in Varaždin), the flag hoisted on the Municipality Hall (photo) has the coat of arms offset to the hoist.

The coat of arms of Beretinec is "Gules a hedgehog or".
The Municipal Statutes claim that this is the historical coat of arms of Beretinec, but even if they provide a longish explanation why the hedgehog was chosen, they do not mention when the coat of arms was granted/adopted for the first time and how it was ever used earlier.
